Enhancing public-private collaboration to drive net-zero ambitions

Strategic Panel

Session Location: Conference Hall A

As the offshore and marine industry embarks on its net-zero journey, policymakers and market players must join forces and align collective ambitions. More robust policies are urgently required to level the global playing field and pave the way for cleaner fuels, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and new infrastructure to support renewable energy sources. Key players within the private sector have proactively formed zero-emission coalitions to advance the energy transition, as the challenge to decarbonise the sector remains insurmountable for a single player. Collaboration from policy makers will be needed to move the industry forward.

Attendee insights:

Gain a clear understanding of the industry outlook and insights into the emergence of public-private collaboration initiatives critical to standardising regulations and accelerating the decarbonisation of the offshore and marine sector.

Session Speakers:

The role of governments in paving the way to green shipping

Leadership interview

Session Location: Conference Hall A

The demand for decarbonising shipping is driven commercially by market pressure and strategically guided by sustainable energy and environmental policy. That said, it is often left to national and local governments to decode policy and implement changes. This can elicit ambitious net-zero pledges from market leaders in highly developed countries, where conditions to support cleaner energy are relatively favourable. A just transition, however, must consider capabilities and limitations across the full economic spectrum, from high-income economies to the least developed countries. This will lead to greater equity in ensuring governments around the globe are equipped with the necessary tools and resources to facilitate decarbonisation efforts.

Attendee insights:

Understand the critical need to drive decarbonisation in shipping across the full spectrum of economies to ensure a comprehensive and just transition.

The road to decarbonising logistics and supply chains

Strategic Panel

Session Location: Conference Hall A

The maritime sector is tightly integrated into the global supply chain system. As such, it is tasked with a key role in reducing scope-3 emissions for companies worldwide. Consumer expectations for sustainable products is equally inclusive of operations and production. As a result, net-zero pledges by major energy organisations must include freight and shipping activities, placing pressure on the offshore and marine industry to deliver cleaner solutions. Localised manufacturing, future-proofed vessels and green corridor development, coupled with the development of market mechanisms are some examples of steps in the right direction—but each player in the complex shipping value chain must step up in order to meet decarbonisation expectations and commitments.

Attendee insights:

Hear from leaders across the offshore and marine value chain on their progress in decarbonisation efforts and the potential for collaboration to accelerate progress.

Next generation fuelling: from liquified natural gas to low-carbon solutions and beyond

Perspectives on Future Fuels

Session Location: Conference Hall A

The marine industry is transitioning from a fuel-powered operating model to one that enables choice in energy sources. Availability and affordability can be the main hurdle when considering alternative fuels. While hydrogen-based energy carriers, such as ammonia and methanol, are positioned as fuels of the future, they remain largely unregulated. Scarcity of supply of alternative fuels and urgency to reduce emissions create growing pressures to utilise existing fuels in the cleanest way possible. Biofuels, in the form of bio-methane, and bio-oils represent opportunities; but access to sustainable biomass and sector competition may limit uptake. Validating and scaling of carbon capture and storage (CCS), together with regulation of upstream methane fugitive emissions, may open an opportunity for hydrogen-based energy carriers to provide a scalable intermediate solution. Looking ahead, will robust development of wind and solar projects facilitate competitive and scalable e-fuels to power the sector?

Attendee insights:

Get clarity around the future of marine fuels, how existing technology can be actively leveraged to track and reduce emissions, and foreseeable options for renewable energy sources and green fuel solutions.

Creating incentives and investment opportunities in offshore and marine

Strategic Panel

Session Location: Conference Hall A

The energy supply crunch has put pressure on the investment community; the environmental, social and governance guardians and shareholders and national oil company stakeholders to reverse the trend in restricting investment in the hydrocarbon energy sector. A new energy investment landscape is needed to encourage both new and existing hydrocarbon production, as well as bring forward next generation energy solutions in a global energy system that will continue to grow. The impact of national carbon policy decisions remains to be seen. However, business decisions will continue to be influenced by market pressures and the reallocation of funding portfolios by investors to prioritise net-zero projects. Meanwhile, first movers expect incentives to lead the energy transition if they are to pay a ‘green premium’—and splitting the net-zero bill will require all hands on deck to progress.

Attendee insights:

Gain insights into how the industry will absorb the costs to transition to low-carbon solutions, the potential bottlenecks in accessing financing and how investment strategies are increasingly shaped by environmental, social and governance policies from consumers.

Navigating modern cybersecurity challenges in offshore and marine

Leadership Interview

Session Location: Conference Hall A

In the context of new operating models and reconfigured supply chains, the offshore and marine industry must heighten its vigilance around cybersecurity. With vast amounts of data collected, shared and analysed across the value chain, the maritime industry is more vulnerable than ever to potential threats. Given operational technology onboard vessels is significantly less mature than information technology in addressing cyber compromises, safety risks to operating crew members are increased by any cyberattack. How can industry leaders prepare now for the inevitable cyberattacks in the future?

Attendee insights:

Deep dive into the challenges of future-proofing offshore and marine operations, and the solutions aimed at preventing cyberattacks.

The digital tools accelerating decarbonisation efforts in shipping

Strategic Panel

Session Location: Conference Hall A

The energy industry has worked hard over many years at placing digital technologies and capabilities at the core of business operations. When applied effectively across marine operations, digital technologies, such as the internet of things, advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence, can provide transparency, predict performance and accurately monitor consumption and emissions, ultimately resulting in optimal energy efficiencies. But modern technologies alone will not propel the industry forward. Decision making, informed by data-driven insights, will require sophisticated perspectives and bold strategies to connect people, organisations and resources in an interactive digital ecosystem.

Empowering future leaders in offshore and marine

Perspectives on Talent

Session Location: Conference Hall A

Evolving business models, different challenges to supply chain resilience, and increasing cyber threats highlight how the nature of work is changing and how work will be organised, structured and done in new ways. With these changes come demands for the talent pool of the future, challenging the industry to put adequate transitions in place today for this to happen. Attracting and retaining the future offshore and marine leaders requires an understanding of, and commitment to their priorities around physical and mental wellbeing and a sense of purpose in their work, technology use and innovative thinking. Today’s offshore and marine leaders must take these insights into account or risk losing the best and brightest to industries adapting to meet their own changing needs.
