Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a lever for decarbonisation of the airline industry

Presentation

Session Location: Decarbonisation Theatre, Decarbonisation Zone, Hall 12

Innovation and forward-looking technologies are the key to reducing greenhouse gases and meeting climate targets. The aviation industry has an important role to play in this. It is responsible for around 2.8 % of total CO2 emissions worldwide and must reduce its footprint to achieve its goal of becoming CO2 neutral by 2050. How can this be achieved? The answer: By using Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF, an umbrella term for jet fuel produced without the use of fossil fuels. In other words, SAF is a genuine alternative, and it is already in use today. At the OMV refinery in Schwechat we produce it from used cooking oil. Flying with leftover frying oil may sound Utopian, but it is already a reality.

Attendee insights:

Hear how OMV are utilising used cooking oil for the development of sustainable aviation fuels.

Harnessing technology to reduce fugitive VOC emissions

Case study presentation

Session Location: Decarbonisation Theatre, Decarbonisation Zone, Hall 12

VOC emissions monitoring has been more art than science. HSE technicians use a mix of hand-held, portable and safety sensors to track emissions. The process gets complicated due to existing time-based rounds and manual inspections. Fugitive VOC emissions don’t happen exactly at the time of inspections. Hence the delayed detections, loss of situational context and sub-optimal fixes. New generation of fixed, continuous monitoring enables real-time emissions detection, anomaly-triggered inspections and timely corrections.

Attendee insights:

This case study gives an overview of successful implementation of technology to reduce VOC emissions at a large refinery.

Methane mitigation in the age of hypertransformation: Bridging flaring to sustainable business cases

Interactive session

Session Location: Decarbonisation Theatre, Decarbonisation Zone, Hall 12

The Earth is warming rapidly, and global temperatures have already surpassed the preindustrial average by 1.1°C. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with important implications for climate change. Although methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), it absorbs much more energy while in the atmosphere. Thus, while methane tends to receive less attention than CO2, it is understood that it can be easier to tackle due to its high concentration in O&G facilities.
