The global energy system has entered a new phase in which digital capability and artificial intelligence are defining how businesses plan, operate and grow their infrastructure. Yet while ambition is rising, progress remains uneven. Many organisations are experimenting with AI-powered digital tools, but few have yet built credible transition pathways that shift away from legacy infrastructure without disrupting operations. What separates leading organisations is not access to technology but the discipline to establish enterprise-wide strategies, secure sustained investment and manage the organisational complexity of moving away from legacy systems at scale. Senior leaders are grappling with long timelines, high costs and skills gaps as they work to build modern environments that support integrated, data-driven decision-making. As these systems grow more interconnected and AI-dependent, resilience moves to the centre of the agenda, the same digital backbone that drives efficiency, also widens exposure to disruption, making business continuity and crisis readiness a design principle rather than an afterthought. The organisations that close the gap between digital ambition and operational reality will define the next generation of competitive energy companies.
