H.E. Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi has held the position of Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) since November 2021. He leads the DoE’s efforts in advancing Abu Dhabi’s strategic approach to the clean energy transition, addressing climate change, energy and water security, and other sustainable development priorities.

Undersecretary Al Rumaithi is responsible for developing medium- and long-term energy strategies, policies, and regulations to drive the Emirate’s energy sector transformation, enabling sustainable socio-economic development in line with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 initiative.

His Excellency has overseen major strategic energy and infrastructure projects at the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and, earlier in his career, led environment and energy efficiency initiatives at Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd. (GASCO). Over the past decade, he has built a track record of delivering some of the world’s largest and most successful clean energy projects, including the Middle East’s first nuclear energy plant and one of the world’s largest single-site operational solar photovoltaic plants.

As a founding executive of Abu Dhabi’s nuclear programme since its inception in 2008, His Excellency served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) between 2015 and 2021, where he oversaw the delivery of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant — with four reactor units generating 40TWh annually of clean electricity annually, equivalent to 25% of the UAE’s total power demand. Since 2018, he has also served as Chairman of Noor Abu Dhabi, the Emirate’s 1.2 GW flagship stand-alone operational solar photovoltaic plant.
