While alkaline and proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers are becoming less dependent on critical materials, innovative solutions, including anion exchange membrane (AEM) and solid oxide electrolysers, are attracting investment, promising higher efficiency and reduced costs. Despite these advances, the broader hydrogen industry is faced with challenging demand expectations, a lack of subsidies, and competition from rapidly evolving alternative technologies, which together require a measured approach to ensure hydrogen's role in sectors where it has clear advantages.
