Ashraf Abufaris is the Head of Gas Treatment for the Middle East and Central Asia at BASF, where he provides regional leadership for the OASE® Gas Treatment and carbon capture (CCUS) portfolio. In this role, he is responsible for shaping strategy, driving business growth, and enabling the deployment of advanced gas treatment and carbon capture solutions aligned with the region’s decarbonization and energy transition objectives.

Ashraf is a recognized expert in carbon capture, acid gas removal, and low‑carbon process design, supporting customers across natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, power generation, refining, and industrial applications. His work focuses on translating net‑zero ambitions into executable projects, covering technology selection, process optimization, solvent development, and integration of CO₂ capture systems into complex energy infrastructures.

With nearly 18 years of industry experience, Ashraf has played a key role in mega‑scale gas processing and CCUS projects across the Middle East and Central Asia. He has led multidisciplinary teams supporting projects from early feasibility and concept selection through FEED, EPC execution, commissioning, and long‑term operational optimization. His leadership bridges technical excellence with commercial and strategic decision‑making, enabling customers to manage risk while accelerating project delivery.

As a regional leader, Ashraf works closely with national oil companies, EPCs, licensors, and internal BASF stakeholders to advance carbon capture at scale, including high‑CO₂ gas fields, blue hydrogen production, post‑combustion capture, and CO₂ conditioning for transport and sequestration. He is actively involved in developing region‑specific CCUS roadmaps, aligning technology deployment with regulatory, economic, and operational realities.

Ashraf holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the American University of Sharjah. Since joining BASF, he has been instrumental in strengthening BASF’s position as a technology leader in gas treatment and carbon capture, contributing to the region’s long‑term sustainability and energy security goals.
