John H. Platt II is a Bechtel Corporation senior vice president and partner, serving as the senior vice president of the New Energies, Chemicals and Fuels business line for Bechtel Energy, Inc. As the lead executive for the business line, John leverages Bechtel's core EPC competencies in olefins, refining, chemicals, and pipeline, along with providing strategy and support to emerging projects in hydrogen and its derivatives, sustainable aviation fuel, and other optimization and decarbonization programs. John has more than 25 years of engineering, construction, and project management experience in the energy, petrochemical, nuclear, security, and environmental sectors. Before assuming his current role, John led Bechtel’s delivery of the Uranium Processing Facility, a multi-billion-dollar construction project for the U.S. Department of Energy. Under his leadership, the team achieved several critical milestones on this first-of-a-kind project that will replace World War II-era production facilities to ensure the long-term safety and security of enriched uranium capabilities in the United States. Previously, John served as Senior Project Manager for Bechtel's Pennsylvania Chemicals project, one of the largest construction projects in the U.S. There he managed the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of an ethylene plant, polyethylene plants, combined cycle power plants, a water treatment plant, rail infrastructure, and other associated facilities. Earlier in his career, John held project management roles on oil, gas, and chemical projects in Baytown, Texas, and Saudi Arabia. In these positions, he introduced innovative solutions that enhanced environmental safety and productivity. From 2001 to 2011, he contributed to Bechtel’s Waste Treatment & Immobilization Plant Project at the Department of Energy’s Hanford Site in Washington state. John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of IEEE, and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Downstream and chemical resilience: the role of strategic mergers and joint ventures

The race to secure market position, enhance supply chains and future-proof operations is driving a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and joint ventures (JVs) across the downstream, petrochemical and refining sectors. Companies are repositioning their portfolios to strengthen resilience and unlock new revenue streams, but with rising pressure on standalone assets, how critical is site integration to long-term viability? These deals present opportunities for cost efficiency, low-carbon innovation and operational synergies, but also introduce challenges such as regulatory scrutiny, geopolitical risks and market demand fluctuations. Stricter environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies and trade tensions are further complicating cross-border transactions, requiring companies to adapt to shifting regulations and integration hurdles.

Attendee insights:

Learn how M&A and joint ventures are transforming downstream markets, reshaping refining strategies and petrochemical investments, and discover which players are leading the next phase of growth.
