Japan Oil Development Co., Ltd. (JODCO), a subsidiary of INPEX CORPORATION (INPEX), Japan’s largest exploration and production company, has been operating in Abu Dhabi for over 45 years. During this time, INPEX/JODCO has been involved in the development and production of oil fields both offshore and onshore, most notably partnering ADNOC on the development of the Upper Zakum Oil Field since 1978 and acquiring a 5% participating interest in the ADCO Onshore Concession in April 2015.

INPEX/JODCO’s activities in Abu Dhabi entered a new era in 2018 when the company was awarded a 10% participating interest in the Lower Zakum Concession as well as an extension of the Satah and Umm Al Dalkh concession.  Today, INPEX/JODCO is engaged in concerted efforts to further enhance the production capacity of Abu Dhabi’s oil fields, particularly at the Lower Zakum Oil Field where it leads production and development activities as Asset Leader.  Meanwhile, INPEX/JODCO was exclusively awarded Onshore Block 4 as operator in the 2018 Abu Dhabi Block Bid Round earlier this year. The company will work in close cooperation with ADNOC to help it unlock value from Abu Dhabi’s substantial hydrocarbon resources while further expanding and strengthening its business portfolio.  INPEX/JODCO is also involved in a variety of stakeholder engagement programs in Abu Dhabi in the areas of education and cultural exchange.

Developing, producing and delivering energy in a sustainable way

Japan Oil Development Co., Ltd. (JODCO), a subsidiary of INPEX CORPORATION, has been involved in the development and production of offshore and onshore oil fields in Abu Dhabi for almost 50 years. Today, INPEX/JODCO is working to further enhance the production capacity of these oil fields, particularly at the Lower Zakum Oil Field as Asset Leader. Meanwhile, INPEX/JODCO leads exploration activities at Onshore Block 4, where drilling commenced in May 2021. Furthermore, looking towards a net zero carbon society by 2050, INPEX/JODCO is evaluating opportunities to produce hydrogen and ammonia from natural gas lifted in Abu Dhabi, utilizing the CO2 created in the process to enhance oil recovery in Abu Dhabi while supplying clean fuel to Japanese utilities. INPEX is also a proud sponsor of the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai where its track record in Abu Dhabi is reflected in the expo’s theme, “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.”

INPEX/JODCO—Past, Present and Future

In 2023, INPEX/JODCO will celebrate its 50th anniversary as well as a half century of involvement in the development and production of oil fields in Abu Dhabi. Look back on our journey from our beginnings in 1973, when Japan sought to secure energy sources to fuel its economic growth, to the current new era in which INPEX/JODCO leads development initiatives at the Zakum oil fields as well as the proactive exploration of Onshore Block 4.
