Youth-led policy panel
Session Location: ICC Hall
More now than ever, young people are appraising climate agendas and policies and seeking to provide input. But exactly how and where the youth of today can contribute to national and global climate policies remains unclear. As the UAE prepares to host COP28, dedicated resources are being mobilised to realise a transparent, innovative, and inclusive climate process that brings together key stakeholders - including youth - to the forefront of climate negotiations. Through pre-event debates, workshops, youth circles and initiatives, COP28 stands to create a new way forward for engaging youth in future policy negotiations. But how have youth responded to these efforts and how will these engagement strategies help to position youth as stakeholders in the upcoming climate negotiations? Ahead of COP28, representatives from global and local youth councils will share the spotlight with policymakers as they put forward their suggestions for effective youth engagement strategies for future energy and climate agendas.
Attendee insights:
Youth council representatives together with energy policy leaders will discuss actionable strategies for engaging youth on critical energy and climate agendas.

Future skills panel
Session Location: ICC Hall
The commercialisation of AI tools is influencing the future of jobs at all levels and across all sectors. Considering its need for models and forecasts, the energy sector has been a key adopter of AI tools, particularly generative AI which can be applied to energy sector use cases that require complex data analysis, pattern recognition, forecasting and optimisation. However, AI is not foolproof, it is widely accepted that human intervention will still be needed to make decisions during unforeseen events that could become catastrophic if left under the governance of AI algorithms. How can tomorrow’s leaders future proof their skillsets to align themselves with the needs of an AI-enabled energy system, and what can industry leaders do to ensure a pipeline of talent equipped to deliver the intelligent energy system of the future?
Attendee insights:
Leaders from energy, technology and academia will convene to discuss how future leaders can prepare for the AI-enabled energy system of the future.

Technology is a key driver and enabler of the energy transition. Clean energy technologies such as green hydrogen and energy storage have the potential to transform our lives and decouple energy from finite resources, enabling security, affordability, accessibility and sustainability. However, to date, only a handful of clean technologies have made the leap from laboratories to commercial scale. In order to realise net-zero goals and an inclusive transition, technology development cycles need to be dramatically reduced. Next-generation digital technologies such as AI, IIoT and blockchain have the potential to accelerate the development of cleantech through their ability to generate, and make sense of, vast amounts of data, cutting down development times. At the same time, when combined with cleantech and enabling policies, digital technologies have the potential to create new markets, new business models, and disrupt the traditional centralised energy model, paving the way for a decentralised energy system that acts as the foundation of an inclusive transition. Young cleantech innovators will describe their journey creating cleantech start-ups from ideation to commercialistion, how they have leveraged digital technologies to inform their innovation cycles, and how their innovations are enabling a more inclusive and sustainable world.
