Conference Overview

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) all play a critical role in the energy transition as the industry embraces an agenda of digitalisation, new business models, innovation and technology. Organisations across the energy industry value chain will need to attract and retain the best and brightest from the global talent pool to achieve their goals.

The youth of today will be the energy industry leaders of tomorrow, but priorities are changing for Gen Z and Millennials. These include the imperative that organisations create, commit to, and deliver a diversity, equity and inclusion agenda. Failure to meet those expectations risks losing talent to other industries.

ADIPEC 2022’s Forum for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will focus on three key themes and how they play a part in the current challenges the industry is facing. As employees recalibrate the nature of work and what they want from employers, they are also tracking examples of their organisation’s DEI commitments, including gender parity, mentorship, diversity across leadership, women’s well-being and more — all of which will be addressed in this year’s programme.

During the forum, global industry leaders will address the importance of their role in fostering a culture that values diverse perspectives, experiences and attracts and retains talent.  Supporting the development of the next generation is essential in driving the energy transition success and ensuring complex issues are tackled, including finding a balance between security, affordability, and sustainability. Diversity, equity and inclusion will play a central role in doing so, unlocking the potential of the future workforce.

Developing effective mentorship

10:50 AM - 11:55 AM

The mentoring process aims to provide support and guidance to professionals as they progress through their careers. In addition to benefits for both mentees and mentors, organisations with mentor programmes can expect to benefit through improved retention, increased productivity and a stronger organisational culture.

Fostering future energy industry expertise and leadership through mentorship

DEI Talk

Session Location: Conference Room B

Mentor programmes are an opportunity to invest in the future of the energy industry by providing junior and mid-level employees with the guidance and connections needed for success in their chosen fields. Mentorship programs empower employees to take ownership of their own personal and professional development, facilitating growth through their relationship with their mentor and providing a trustworthy resource with whom to consult for advice. With the energy transition underway, mentorship is a key component in attracting the workforce of the future and preparing the next generation of leaders.

Attendee insights:

Gain an understanding of how organisations at all levels of the energy industry can benefit from mentorship and what this means for aspiring leaders.

Effective mentoring: what’s in it for the mentor and mentee, and how it strengthens the workplace

Mentor and Mentee Interview

Session Location: Conference Room B

Mentoring relationships bring benefits for the individuals involved as well as the organisations they work for: cross-organisational knowledge sharing, personal growth, fostering leadership development from within and more. This can be especially true when purposely incorporating a DEI agenda into mentorship to reach those who historically face biases that can impede their career paths. It is particularly important for the energy industry as it strives to adapt for the talent pool of the future. Challenges in today’s business and cultural environment can include building effective connections in a hybrid world, bridging the gap between Boomers, Gen Xers, Gen Zers and Millennials, and taking advantage of the role mentoring can play in effective succession planning.

Attendee insights:

Understand how mentorship benefits the individuals involved as well as the organisation they work for and how to foster diversity, equity and inclusion ambitions strategically through mentorship.

Women’s well-being and empowerment in the workplace

12:10 PM - 01:30 PM

Gender diversity from leadership levels through to entry-level roles is a success key to an organisation’s overall performance. To support women’s presence and success in their organisation, employers must ensure access to health benefits, well-being resources and support, and flexibility that supports equitable expectations for career success as well as work-life balance.

Creating momentum in professional mobility and advancement for women

DEI Talk

Session Location: Conference Room B

In addition to their professional responsibilities, women often assume primary caretaking responsibilities in their personal lives, sometimes across multiple generations. Organisations that fail to provide support and flexibility for employees who are facing these conflicting priorities risk minimising the contributions and curtailing the potential of some of their strongest talent. Travel, location and schedule flexibility along with optionality in career paths are just some of the ways organisations can support women—and men—in creating successful job and career experiences without sacrificing personal commitments and priorities.

Attendee insights:

Understand how outdated business models and attitudes impact women across organisations and the tools available to create solutions that support individuals while delivering success for the business.

Reframing the conversation around work-life balance in the energy sector

Perspectives on Work-Life Balance

Session Location: Conference Room B

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), despite making up 39% of the global labour force, women only account for 22% of traditional energy sector labour. The lower percentage of women in the industry can, in part, be attributed to historical barriers to creating and maintaining a work-life balance. Employees are increasingly burning out as the line blurs between home and work. This can be especially true for women, who often hold competing roles as primary caregivers across generations at home and as professionals striving to manage responsibilities at work. Organisations across the energy ecosystem must adapt to create support for work-life balance and flexibility for women reconciling family responsibilities with career ambitions.

Attendee insights:

Understand the relevance of work-life balance, how it affects women in the industry and why organisations are critical in achieving it.

Gender parity in leadership

02:00 PM - 03:30 PM

Progress towards gender diversity in leadership roles across the energy industry has been made in recent years. However, barriers to progress and organisational inequalities remain. Closing the gender gap at leadership levels will require a continual and all-around commitment from both men and women leaders to gain long-term organisational success.

Elevating equal representation on Africa’s energy industry leadership ladder to ensure a just energy transition

Strategic Panel Session

Session Location: Conference Room B

Analysts and industry commentators agree climate change will have a disproportionate impact on women. Given the extreme impacts of climate change in Africa and other areas of the Global South, it is important to make a conscious commitment to gender equity. This includes acknowledging and addressing the disproportionate impacts on women as well as ensuring women have seats at the table in energy access and climate discussions. The upcoming Conference of Parties (COP) in Egypt and the UAE reinforce the need to begin inclusive conversations now.

Attendee insights:

Understand how climate change disproportionately impacts women and why their contributions as decision-makers, stakeholders and experts across the energy industry can lead to more successful climate change solutions.

STEAM, gender and imposter syndrome: breaking stereotypes to foster inclusion, growth and success

DEI Talk

Session Location: Conference Room B

Careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) can be challenging regardless of gender. However, experts suggest that feelings of imposter syndrome are bound to be more prevalent in environments where there are gender imbalances. This raises questions around paving a smoother path for rising leaders in STEAM career tracks, bridging gender gaps and cultivating a sense of belonging in the workplace.

Attendee insights:

Gain an understanding of what imposter syndrome is, why it affects women in leadership positions and what can be done to overcome it.
